101 IAF pilots have applied for early retirement. A K Antonay
9 December 2009
NEW DELHI: Government on Wednesday said 101 Indian Air Force pilots have applied for premature retirement citing suppression, lack of career progression, medical and compassionate grounds as the reasons.
"Around 101 pilots of the IAF have applied for the grant of premature retirement during the last one year," Defence minister A K Antony said in a written reply to a query in the Rajya Sabha.
"The broad reasons furnished by applicants for grant of premature retirement are suppression, lack of career progression, medical and compassionate (grounds) etc," he said.
The minister said the IAF considers these applications on-case-to-case basis in accordance with the existing government policies.
He added that the IAF was taking several steps such as advertising in print and electronic media, motivational lectures in schools and participation career fairs to reach out to youth across the country.
Replying to another query, the minister said IAF had lost 13 aircraft in different crashes during the year.
The list includes an An-32 transport aircraft, three MIG 27s, three MiG 21s, two Su-30MKIs in Jaisalmer, one each Mi-17 and Mi-8 along with two trainer aircraft.

In India, unlike many other nations, the defense personnel don't get what their counter parts get in comparison to the local community. India's fast growing aviation industry needs pilots and fighter pilot with their experience and abilities suit very well for commercial aircrafts. I think after flying for couple of years, the pilots who have done it all have the urge to earn more.
Govt of India cannot increase their pay and what would happen is only few seniors might get early retirement rest would continue to work. IAF cannot let go of its pilots.

Indian Pilots are paid well, the lowest level FP a Flying officer gets 37000pm. Thats considerably better than a foot soldier or a sailor.

But the thing is that they want more. And the more is available.

Actually the carriers are paying way to much, thats what causing the trouble. India's Pay commission should drop the socialist befits like home, low rate loans, expenses and the other perks and increase the salary.

I agree. And yes, not to mention - pension too. This is kinda off topic, but I think its about time that the government outsource as much as it can and keep the key institutions like military, police, Court and bureaucrats. Work efficiency of an Govt employee to private is easily 1:3. So if we save all this we can pay the military, police etc a lot.

I wont mind if they give up the bureaucracy to private firms too

They can't. They will turn everything into business, thats why you need bureaucrats. . You can have an option of having bureaucrats who were some MDs, VPs etc to run the system. I mean civil service exam should not be the only way to get in.

Yup I know that i was just joking but think if private companies are given the contract to run a bureaucratic depts and have tenders like MRCA to get every dept than it will increase the efficiency and if they make profit by doing so than why should we cry. As long as they are doing there job better than there is know harm in letting em earn profit. Just an idea.
Your idea of letting VPs and CEO's is good too, look at the Multipurpose National Identity Card thingy, Nielkani former CEO of Infosys is doing a great job.

Both of you, Nalin and Pratik are right. We need to commercialise everything we can. We need bureaucrats because they are in the system and are suppose to be expert in the work. Their staff should be not govt servants but private contractors. This in addition to what both of you said, would help curbing the snail pace govt system from the snails.

Wrong solution to the wrong problem . Square peg , round hole . Indian cos are bureaucratic too . No real spirit of productivity or competition , only profit . Not even long term viability , juts short term gain.

Public sector is not only eating away precious financial resources but also providing less, it has next to no short term gains and very few long term gains. Private sector though is primarily profit making but it also delivers both for short term as well as for long term. They are more efficient thus will consume less financial resource. We live in a increasingly capitalist society and to survive will have to add a capitalism to our socialist ideology.
I am a socialist.
