The new Afghan war
When the cold war still at its a height, a new battle in one of the oldest battle fields was being fought but for a change it was a war of hide and seek. Soviets had come to Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. Afghanistan was not like what it is now. There were educational institutes, Radio channels, food stores, markets. An afghan army and an afghan air force. Communism was the new form of government. Highway connected Kabul to USSR. 5 Years of internal fighting between mujhadeen and Afghan army crippled the country. USSR retreated in 1987 and so does all US economic and military aid.
Sept 11, 2001 changed it all. When 4 US civil airliners hit key buildings in US of A. Since then US is trying hard to eliminate the same mujhadeens it once supported to fight then soviet union. Paskistan a key alley of taliban, now finds itself in the war too. NATO is finding hard to get support for the fight with only UK giving considerable support. With NATO now asking Russia for support, what do you think is future of Afghanistan? Will taliban come to an end? Will afghanistan see Pakistan and India support it or will Afghanistan once again a dispute issue.

Re: The new Afghan war
I see only two conclusions .
1) US keeps on without major impact , losing soldiers until domestic opposition grows and they pull out of Afghanistan .
2) They pound Afghanistan until there's not much left to shoot/bomb .
In either case , Islamic terror won't end anytime soon . So regardless of how many Afghans killed, US didn't wipe of terrorism . Not just yet .

I don't think that the US citizens will let this carry on for long. So as obama said, the troops would start pulling out. And what is there to bomb in afghanistan anyway? What is left? Whatever was there, was taken out by taliban themselves. Now they can't kill everyone holding an AK.
No one actually cares abt Afghanistan anyways. Neither the US, nor the Europeans nor the Pakistanis. The major goal should/could be taking care of the local commanders. Destroying Al-Quida. The key leaders must be eliminated.

No Foreign force will be able to eliminate the Taliban, Afghani people should have the willingness to eradicate them. Only the internal security forces will be able to defeat them without anyones active support. Nobody likes bunch of foreigners in their country roaming with guns and in tanks threating their country as training ground. When Afghan army fights them only then the people of Afgan will support them, until than NATO soldiers will keep dieing and nobody will get what they want.

I agree with Pratik. Its not a war between armies that can be won, its army vs insurgents you can say. Much like Kashmir. Has Indian army been able to eliminate all threat? And how many years did it take Indian army to simply cool the tensions down? And here we are talking about afghanistan. Its not your country, people won't welcome you and every one carries AK47, how would u know who is a talibani and who is not?
I also think what US Army would do by the end of the year is try to create a scenario where:
1. Taliban strong holds and training camps are destroyed.
2. Somewhat try to reduce the scare of Taliban among people.
3. Try to raise back the afghan army it so proudly destroyed.
4. Create a good will among people so that the hate factor reduces.
5. And probably create centers to do special ops long after US Army has left Afghanistan
